Purchase of The Right of Burial - Bournemouth Borough Council (2014).
Bournemouth Borough Council grant exclusive Rights of Burial under the Local Authorities Cemeteries order 1977. It currently offers periods of 50 years or 75 years with 10 year extension available up a maximum of 99 years.
The fees are as follows:
Adult Rotation Grave £888.00 to £1333.00
Adult Selected Grave £1045.00 to £1568.00
Class I Selected Grave £1690.00 to £2540.00
Class II Selected grave £1610.00 to £2414.00
Reclaimed lawn grave £731.00 to £1097.00
Child’s grave £300.00 to £450.00
When purchasing the Right of Burial to a grave this effectively gives the grave owners control over burials in the grave and the right erect a memorial. As the law stands at present, the grave owner’s permission is required to authorise any opening of the grave for an interment or the erection of a memorial upon it. If the grave is not full, the grave owner has, after their demise, the right to be interred in the grave and have their name added to any existing memorial as it is assumed that this was their wish.
On the death of the grave owner the Right of Burial goes with them but can be transferred allowing further interments if space is available in the grave, any alterations, additional inscriptions to the existing memorial or the erection of a new memorial.
The Rights of Burial can be held by a maximum of six persons. This is not the persons who are intending to be buried in the grave but those who can authorise a burial in the grave and the erection of a memorial upon it.
The purchase of the Right of Burial is not required in a rotation, reclaim or child’s grave in order to have a burial but unless the rights were purchased a memorial could not be erected.
If a grave has not been purchased, this burial authority does have the right to reclaim the grave if a sufficient depth is still available in the grave for a burial after a period of 20 years has lapsed from the first burial. Remains are never disturbed or exhumed but the next available depth would be used. The Rights of Burial to the reclaimed grave could be purchased for the recent burial. Therefore if family from the original burial then came forward and wanted to purchase the rights, they could not.
Please bear in mind that these costs are for the burial plot only and it does not include the costs for preparation of the grave for burial.
